Social media has been a catalyst of change for the way millions of people communicate. https://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/6244/7-Reasons-Social-Media-Is-Bad-for-Marketing.aspx#sm.0001jt6cuyddrd36w6s2pf1qh7ux3. Social media users are growing day-by-day. There are over 3 billion internet users—and over 2 billion of them have active social media accounts. https://blog.hootsuite.com/social-media-for-business/.

Facebook is a two line interaction which helps companies and organizations to utilize its platform to connect with their customers or audience. There are over 600,000 regular users worldwide using Facebook. https://www.singlegrain.com/blog-posts/impact-of-social-media-in-todays-business-world/. Social media is a great platform to run your business in terms of advertising your products and staying connected with your customers. It is with the help of social media, the companies got another new way to run their online business. It helps them to stay connected with their customers instantly which also build personal relationship with each other.

Some of the positive impacts of social media on Business are:

  • Information on social media web moves faster– the digital media has made it more simple and faster way for the businesses to get their information out to the public instead of waiting for the next day to advertise it in newspapers. It is much easier to share content which reaches to the customers and targeted audience.
  • It has increased customer power– if customers are happy with your company’s products, they can also influence others to shop with your company and benefit from the services. Positive customer comments and reviews will increase your company’s reputation and sales. Good publicity also spreads very fast with good customer reviews.
  • It builds good relationship with your customers. Social, media is a two way platform. If your brands or products are good then it helps the company to maintain good relationship with their customers. If customers are satisfied with the brands then it helps your business to grow faster and maintain your customer’s lifetime.
  • It also increases exposure– social media is a way to stay on top of your customers mind. This will also help you to maintain your current customers and also attract new customers.
  • Plenty options– Before the businesses were having only limited ways to advertise their business such as radio commercial, TV or a print advertisement but now thanks to the digital media where the business gets more options to choose from. The business can advertise on social media platforms or even create their own web-sites. http://smallbusiness.chron.com/positive-negative-impact-digital-media-business-20910.html

Some of the negative impacts of social media on Business are:

  • Information moves faster on social media- Social media has become a greatest media platform for customers to complain about the business. The more complain you get, the more your companies brand will suffer. Negatives comments from customers may put your business in risk because social media platforms reach more than 30 people in one minute. Negative reviews will allow other customers to think not to purchase anything from a company they have heard a bad thing. It is easy to raise your voice by just updating a status or by tweet. https://moondogmarketing.com/the-negative-effect-of-social-media
  • Bad publicity spreads too- Repetition of a company’s business is very important therefore negative reviews and comments about your company or even inappropriate posts on your account can cause damage to the business.
  • If any information is accidently released which was supposed to be confidential, can also be harmful to your business. Once information is put on social media, it cannot be easily taken away because information spreads faster on web. Even if a mistake made on social media is hard to correct or fix.
  • It is also your employees who represent your brand image. It is hard to control and monitor your employees on social media but it should also be their responsibility that they should not post any information about their companies matter unless they are given authority.

Facts and Figures

Only one in seven companies has a formal process in place for the use of social networking in their businesses, a survey by Cisco Systems Inc. revealed in 2010. The same survey also noted that only one in five companies has established a policy about the use of social media. This lack of formalized attention is unfortunate considering the varied risks and negative effects on business that are associated with social media. http://smallbusiness.chron.com/negative-effects-social-media-business-25682.html

Social Media Examiner’s 2015 Social Media Marketing Industry Report holds valuable insight into how marketers are incorporating social media, how much time they’re spending and what is on the horizon. In my opinion, social media has changed the way companies do the business online. It is indeed true that social media is one of the best way to advertise your business and connect with your targeted audience. It helps to create awareness and engage with the users. We also cannot avoid the fact that social media has negative impacts on businesses. In order to avoid these negative impacts, the business should know how to handle matters professionally with causing any harm to the business and your customers. It is important to always avoid posting something which is sensitive to your customers. Social media helps to grow your business and engages you with your audience which extents your business. The only thing a business can do to maintain its reputation is to develop their monitoring skills (Monitor, Respond, and Repeat).

Take action now before it’s too late.

IMPACTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON JOURNALISM

This blog will highlight the positive and negative impacts of social media on Journalism.

Social-media-audience-AAAS

In this modern era, technology has developed massively. Due to this, the way we consume news has also changed. Some of the journalists themselves are nowadays relying on social media for news stories. Social media plays an important role but at the same time it also affects Individuals and other industries. http://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/publication/rise-social-media-and-its-impact-mainstream-journalism. Social media is able to break news stories instantly to a large number of people and receive instance responses from the audiences. Social media is affecting journalism because journalists will do the interviews and then write the stories in the newspaper which will be printed next day but social media is instant. Since everyone is turning more towards social media, journalists in newsrooms are also divided into groups to look after the news stories. For instance, four to five journalists will look at the digital part of journalism while others will look at the print way of breaking news. Social media is not only affecting the journalism industry but it is also changing the role of the journalists. http://www.cision.com/us/2015/08/is-social-media-changing-the-role-of-journalists/.

Some of the positive impacts of Social Media on journalism are:

  • Faster– The social media is faster than the newspaper in revealing news. We do not have to wait for the next day to read the breaking news in the paper or see it on Television. Whatever happens, the public is present on the spot before the journalists arrive therefore the public keeps us updated immediately by uploading images and videos about the happenings.
  • Cheap and easy– It is cheaper to use social media than buying a newspaper every day because one just needs to buy data or use Wi-Fi in order to get connected and get news updates. You can access social media from anywhere. You no longer have to go to the shop to buy a newspaper.
  • Google– Nowadays everything is on social media and people can also follow news on internet. Google is one of the best ways to update you with the news by just going to the websites and following it daily.
  • Images and videos are powerful– social media has videos and live images which people like to see rather than just seeing the images on the newspaper or wait for next day to see the videos on Television. People can share those images and videos on social media so that others can also see it and get well updated with the happenings of the world.
  • Helping journalists in gathering news – most of the time whenever news breaks from the general public, it helps journalists to gather news and do the follow ups. This helps them to collect more data on the news stories. The public will be just touching the story but journalists will do their research, will further investigate on the matter and find each and every data in terms of what is right and wrong. It is still the duty of a journalist to check, verify and then evaluate the news found on social media before writing the news. http://www.socialsongbird.com/2013/09/social-medias-impact-on-journalism.html

Some of the Negative impacts of Social Media on journalism are:

  • Newsworthy or not? – Online news is getting popular day-by-day but not all the news which is posted on social media is always true. Sometimes people just want to create content or stories instead of news. Social media is helpful to consume news because it provides instant news with videos and images. The member of public is present at the incident however this is not always the case because sometimes people just want to grab attention by posting fake stories. Therefore, one must see how relevant the news is and are the sources reliable or not.

  • Anyone can be a journalist? – It is mostly journalist’s job to break a story but it is also not possible that a journalist will be present at the scene whereas the member of a public can be present at the place and instantly break the news with images and videos. It has both negative and positive point but it all depends on the readers how they consume news.
  • The process that happens before a story is published has also been transformed. Many newsrooms have also decided to break the stories first on social media (on their wedsites) so that they can grab their reader’s attention and maintain the relationship with their audiences.”People used the web to connect to the experience by watching it in real time on TV and then posting on message boards and forums. They posted bits of information they knew themselves and aggregated it with links from elsewhere. For most, the delivery was crude, but the reporting, linking and sharing nature of news coverage emerged at that moment.” https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/feb/20/what-effect-internet-on-journalism. This depicts that whatever is posted by the public on social media is not always reliable but readers can verify it by doing little bit of research in order to get the real story instead of just spreading fake news.

The facts and figures shows that social media has affected Journalism. More and more people are turning on to social media for news updates. For instance, “One organization that looked into how social media was affecting journalism was Ofcom (the regulatory system for anything that is broadcast in the UK). Ofcom’s statistics show that social media has seen a huge increase across many different age groups, with almost half of 16-24s now using sites such as Facebook and Twitter as a news source. This research shows that in 2014, 30% of 16-24-year-olds used social media to consume news, and one year later in 2015, a whopping 47% of the same age group used social media for the same reason. With a jump of 17% in only one year, this could mean that nearly all of that age group could be using social media as the only source for news by 2019”. https://www.homeagency.co.uk/blog/social-media/social-media-changing-journalism/.

In my opinion, social media has become a major news source not for only general public but also for some of the journalists. As the trend continues, individuals entering the world of broadcast journalism will have to be prepared to fight an internal battle between publishing content quickly to get links and publishing content that is factually accurate. https://www.nyfa.edu/student-resources/social-media-in-journalism/. Social media is taking our lives therefore it has both positive and negative impacts on journalism. It depends on the users which way they want to consume news and get updated with the happenings of the world. We can also say that the future of journalism is through social media. It is important that journalism industry should also work with the developments of the world. Though social media breaks the news first but it is also true that not everyone is on social media. There are many people who rely on newspapers for stories and updates therefore we as journalists and general public should also support the newsrooms to save the print media industry and let journalists also do their work.

Impacts Of Social Media On Communities

This Blog will highlight the positive and negative impacts of social media on communities.

Social media has extremely grown in the last few years. From 2006 onward the growth rate is unexpectedly very high. Especially Facebook and Twitter have grown much faster and captured millions of users in just a few years. It has been seen that people now live online, sharing every detail of their lives online. No matter which part of the world you stay, the social media networks have helped people to stay connected to each other but it has also limited role in developing face-to-face contact in communities. Social media helps communities and individuals to interact with the world around us. It has made us closer to other parts of the world. Social media networks have made the world a smaller place because we can get anything we want to know. https://www.techmaish.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-social-media-for-society/

Some of the positive impacts of social media on communities are:

  • Connectivity– the main advantage of social media is that it helps us to stay connected with people anywhere. Regardless of the region and location. The social media helps to connect communities and individuals which help them to share information and learn from each other.
  • Education– the social media helps students, teachers and other people to share information which helps them to learn from each other. Regardless of your location and education background you can educate yourself, without paying for it.
  • Can get help from other communities– one can share their issues with other communities and get help and guidance. The communities with you are connected to, can help you in terms of advice or in terms of money.
  • Information and updates- you can update yourself from the latest happenings of the world. Nowadays everything is there, you just need to Google it and do some research to verify whether the information is accurate or not.
  • Helps in Building Communities“since our world has different religions and beliefs. Social media helps in building and participating in the community of own religion and believes to discuss and learn about it. Similarly, people of different communities can connect to discuss and share related stuffs. For example Game lover can join games related communities; car lover can join communities related to cars and so on”.

https://www.techmaish.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-social-media-for-society/

However, some of the negative impacts of social media on communities are:

  • Limits the amount of face-to-face social interactions. It reduces the strengths of our communities and socially eroding the social identity of our communities. Here is the link which shows how the people are interacting with their neighbors when they want to borrow anything from them. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/impact-social-media-our-communities-olajide-olamide. Neighbors are the first people who are going to stand in your sadness therefore one needs to have good relationship with them.
  • Cyber bullying– since it is easy for anyone to create fake accounts and do anything without being traced, it becomes easy for anyone to bully anyone on the internet. “Threats, intimidation messages and rumors can be sent to the masses to create discomfort and chaos in the society”.
  • Hacking and Privacy– despite having tight security settings, your personal information may leak on the social media sites. Personal data and privacy can be easily hacked by hackers and shared on social sites or internet. It can cause loss of personal life too. Several personal twitter and Facebook accounts have been hacked in the past and the hacker had posted materials that have affected the individual’s personal lives”. It is advised to every user of social media to keep their personal data and accounts safe to avoid such accidents. It is better not to post each and every detail of your life on social media. Over sharing of information leads to loos of privacy.
  • Addiction– spending too much time on social sites can divert the focus and attention from a particular work or task. It also lowers the motivational level of people (especially students and teenagers). One can do some other productive activity instead of wasting time on social media.
  • Reputation– someone’s reputation can be easily ruined on social media just by creating a fake account, posting fake stories with and spreading it across the internet. I have met people whose reputation has been ruined on Facebook. Communities name will be also ruined because everyone will be willing to know from which community the victim belongs to. https://www.techmaish.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-social-media-for-society/

“In order to regenerate our communities, we need to respect each other, protect each other’s privacy and show genuine care towards each other. It is a step one at a time and each step we take towards building our building our communities will definitely worth the journey”.

Take a step today.

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/impact-social-media-our-communities-olajide-olamide

eso_aw_logo_b_cIn my opinion, it can be said that social media does plays an important role in communities but there are negative impacts too which one cannot overlook. It depends on individuals how communities use these social media sites. Social media has impacted our communities a lot. “It is imperative to remember that the genuine human experience of being able to communicate in person, network in person and form relationships with others outweighs social media”. https://www.theodysseyonline.com/social-medias-impact-society. I do find social media interesting and distractive too but I am not really addicted to it like some of the other teenagers and adults. When I am in any function or doing any activity, I do not post each and everything on Facebook. I hardly touch my phone because that is the time we interact with people and have face-to-face communications.

Impacts Of Social Media On Education

This blog will highlight the positive and negative impacts of social media on education.

In this modern era, the impact of social media on education is becoming a driving factor. Every day social media is changing education. “OUR world is changing at a blinding pace that is accelerating with each passing day”. http://www.fijitimes.com/story.aspx?item=letters. Compared to olden days, the way we deliver instructions nowadays, is changing because of the use of technologies. This platform is all about community-based input, contact, content-sharing, and alliance. “Facebook has over 500 million users, while Twitter has over 200 million”. http://www.edudemic.com/social-media-education/.  Everyone wants to be online everyday whether it is for educational purpose, to stay connected to their friends and families or to be online to watch YouTube. Many people argue on the impacts of social media on education that it is good while others might disagree with this opinion.

Some of the positive impacts of social media on education are:

  • It helps people to stay connected with others and develop a career or building businesses. (Stay connected to any part of the world).
  • Social networking has increased the rate of better communication skills. It also helps students and other people to share information quickly. For example, students can create groups and study whereby they can ask questions and get instant feedbacks.
  • Nowadays people spend too much time on social media. It helps students to work with technologies which can also help them in building their personal websites by using the correct layout and designs of online publications. This can reflect the amount of skills one have an interest in any work field.
  • It increases people’s knowledge.

http://www.edudemic.com/social-media-education/

However, there are some of the negative impacts of social media on education:

  • Many students rely on social media for information which is good and bad too because one side it increases knowledge but on the other hand, it also decreases students ability to write effectively. For example, the computer checks spelling and grammar of any piece of work but when it comes to writing on paper, students get poor spellings and grammar.
  • Most of the time, students are online therefore this results in low academic performances. Students also try to do multi task by checking social media while they are studying. This is how they lose their concentration and start chatting with their friends.
  • It is also seen that people spend less time in person because they spend more time on social media. For instance, if there is any function, we can see most of the children are busy using Facebook, chatting with friends, watching YouTube instead of communicating with people or concentrating on religious activities.
  • Social media is a platform where it depends on individuals how they use it whether in a good or bad manner. Students spend more money on buying data every time and staying online.
  • Many students that have access to the GSM waste their time on it by chatting and surfing the Internet for non-educative information.http://informationparlour.com/article-education-effects-social-media-education
  • It is also true that students are pressing their phones in during classes, seminars and also in the libraries. This shows that they are getting addicted day-by-day.

Statistics of a few social media platforms

  • Facebook—1.6 billion
  • YouTube—Billion-plus visitors
  • Whats app—950 million
  • Google plus—440 million
  • Instagram—430 million
  • LinkedIn—420 million
  • Twitter—230 million
  • Research Gate—9 million

https://www.toppr.com/bytes/effect-of-social-media-on-youth-2/

Social media plays an important role in in many other areas for instance in marketing to business interactions and to the overall effect social media has on society. It can also transform education much how the flipped classrooms model is making changes. https://www.academiaapps.com/role-social-media-education/. Social media attracts students which is a destruction for them if it is not used in a correct way.

Here are some of the links on the impacts of social media on education:

http://blog.flipclass.com/2015/10/07/positive-impact-of-social-media-on-education/

ch3In my opinion, it can be said that social media plays an important role in this modern era. It depends on individuals how they use these technologies, whether they use it for educational purposes or misuse it. Social media helps in education by Socializing, sharing knowledge, updating oneself, learning from various sources, bring prepared and sharing what you feel or think  http://www.careerindia.com/features/what-are-the-positive-effects-of-social-networking-on-education-008594.html while on the other hand, the negative impacts include  reduction in human contact, sometimes time wastage, low grades which results in loss of motivation in students and it also has effects on health. http://performancing.com/negative-effects-of-social-networking-sites-for-students/. It is important that we do not misuse the social media sites, instead one should use it for academic proposes so that we learn, become more educated and know what is good for us.

The dark side of Social media

http://fijisun.com.fj/2016/02/27/social-media-the-dark-side/

Impacts Of Social Media On Teenagers

Media today has a huge influence on teenagers. The media today is powerful and omnipresent. Social media is a websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts. But all is not bad with the media. If media is used in a right way, it can change lives for good. It has been seen that many of the teenagers spend an average of 8 hours online every day. This does not mean that they are spending time only in doing educational things such as research and learning. Plenty time is spent on social media sites like Facebook and YouTube.

This blog will highlight the positive and negative impacts of social media on teenagers.Erica-Duran-Takes-The-Stress-Out-Of-Social-Media-1080x675

Some of the positive impacts of social media on teenagers include:

  • The media helps to develop awareness and gives teens skills to become more confident and independent about society and the world. It also helps to educate young people. Any teenager, who is not aware of anything, can be well informed through the platform of media. (Follow the link for more information) http://www.teenshield.com/blog/2016/06/28/positive-effects-of-social-media/
  • Social media also inspires teenagers for instance, if a teen’s favorite celebrity’s movie is played on TV, or any video which has been uploaded on Facebook, can motivate them towards positive path.
  • Social media also helps teenagers to develop reading and writing skills for example if a celebrity talks about her favorite book, the teenager might be tempted to grab a book too. If he or she is deeply inspired by the writings, they can start their own blog or websites for writing their views and giving other readers more information on a particular topic.  (http://www.momjunction.com/articles/positive-and-negative-influences-of-media-on-teenagers_00107975/#gref)academicssocialmedia

However there are also some negative impacts of social media on teenagers which includes:

  • Risky sexual behavior is one of the major impacts of social media on teenagers because teens are just discovering their sexuality therefore the amount of sex in media today can make a teenager confuse. This results in sex without responsibility and leads to irresponsible sexual behavior and unwanted pregnancies.
  • The chance of obesity is high because most of the teenagers nowadays spend too much time in front of the TV, computer and phones. Playing outside has become a rarity. By looking at the today’s bad eating habits, obesity is a major concern.
  • Cyber bullying is another growing trend among social media websites. Cyber bullyingis the use of cell phones; instant messaging, e-mail, chat rooms or social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to harass threaten or intimidate someone. Cyber bullying can have dangerous and potentially fatal effects. It claims many victims each year. Victimization of young people online has received an increasing level of scrutiny, particularly after a series of high-profile suicides of teenagers who were reportedly bullied on various social networks.pic4

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/suren-ramasubbu/influence-of-social-media-on-teenagers_b_7427740.html)

Here are the links of cyber bullying which highlights on the statistics of it:

https://www.teensafe.com/blog/cyber-bullying-facts-and-statistics/

https://www.rawhide.org/blog/wellness/teen-cyberbullying-and-social-media-use-on-the-rise/

  • Privacy– is really important in social media but there are many teenagers who give each and every detail about themseveles on social media that it becomes easy for anyone to track a person and interfere in other peoples live. Hackers edit other people’s photos and upload on social media sites therefore; this creates a bad image of the victimized person.

(Follow the link http://smallbusiness.chron.com/negative-effect-social-media-society-individuals-27617.html)

Thus, it can be said that the media is just a tool and like any other tool, how you use it depends on you whether you use in a positive way or negative way. Teenagers spend too much time on social media which results negatively and often lead to social media addiction. Social media can be used as a voice of reason in society in a positive and negatively way. Parents should monitor their children on these social media sites so that they are not out of their shoes. There should be a strict law that whoever does any harassment or makes face accounts on social media, should be heavily fined or jailed so that there can be less cases of suicides.  social-media-branding
